The Juniper Summer Writing Institute is an inclusive literary space that welcomes adult poets and writers at all stages of their careers. Acceptance to the Institute is based upon the strength and promise of the writing sample. We operate on a rolling admissions basis, and we do our best to make admission decisions within 2-6 weeks of receiving applications. (Response time will be longer in the months of December and January.)
Once accepted, enrollment in the Institute is guaranteed on a first-come, first-served basis. You will need to put down a non-refundable deposit of $200 to secure your space.
Application materials include:
- Writing sample
- Indication of your top choices for workshop leaders
- Writer's Statement
- NO application fee!
The strength and promise of your writing sample is the most important component of your application. Send your best work; it needn’t be published, though published work is acceptable. Writing samples are comprised of:
- 5 pages of poetry (one poem per page) if applying for a poetry workshop or residency
- up to 10 pages of fiction or creative nonfiction (double-spaced) if applying to a fiction or nonfiction workshop or residency
A statement of around 300 words addressing any of these (or similar) questions:
- What do you hope to work on during Juniper; what excites you about that project?
- What does being a valuable member of a writing community look like to you?
- What (if any) identities or experiences inform your work?
You will have the opportunity in your application form to indicate your preferences* for workshop leader. Every effort will be made to accommodate your preferences.
The Institute awards 5 full scholarships to workshop participants. These scholarships include housing and all meals. We especially encourage applications from individuals from underrepresented groups, of diverse life experiences and backgrounds, and those who have experienced socioeconomic disadvantage or discrimination. To be considered for a scholarship, please check the "Scholarship" box in the scholarship consideration section of the application form. If you are not applying for funding, please choose "Self-pay."
Scholarship applications must be submitted by January 15, 2022.
